Term 4- Cuisine from around the World- 1st recipe- Vietnamese Spring Rolls
Vietnamese Spring Rolls Ingredients that we used... CarrotCucumberPeanutsCorianderRice NoodlesRice paperVietnamese dipping sauce Method First, we grated the carrot, then we sliced the cucumber thinly. We put the peanuts in a plastic bag and hit them with a hammer to make them into small pieces. We then cut the coriander with the scissors into small bits. Boiled the jug to pour hot water over the rice noodles. We put the rice paper into hot water to make it soft. Then we put some carrot on to the rice paper. We put some cucumber and the other ingredients on the rice paper. Wrap the rice paper around until it is tight. Then you have a nice Vietnamese spring roll.

Bike Ready programme-Our Grade 2-3 lessons during Week 9- We practised our skills on the road!
Learning Bike Skills with Aaron and his crew from Lakes' Council during Week 8
Our Grade 1 session included learning how to check our helmets and bikes before we start riding. We also learned how to do hand signals. Next week we go out of school to learn how to be safe!
Learning how to code mBots with Matua Tamati
The challenge was to rescue the people in the houses as there had just been an earthquake. The mBots had to collect all the people and take them to hospital. Payton's code worked, she has the iPad!
Learning how to detect myrtle rust in our school grounds with Kat (DoC) and Rowan (SCION) 28.08
Myrtle rust arrived in New Zealand from spores that floated across from Australia. Myrtle rust grows in spring. It will affect our natives like pohtukawa, kanuka, manuka, ramarama, rata and exotic plants like feijoas and bottlebrush. Kat and Rowan took us out to explore and identify the plants affected by myrtle rust. We labelled some of these plants so we can investigate them again in spring. We must protect our plants and trees from myrtle rust as many of our insects rely on these plants for food, including bees! Thank you to our visitors, we will protect our gardens from myrtle rust!
Our 'Sustainability' Art Mural We worked collaboratively to colour our mural.
Using the House of Science Kit- Invasion Busters
We are learning about biosecurity. We know the MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries) is in charge of protecting our boarders from unwanted pests at our airports and sea ports. We know that MPI helps protect our native flora and fauna and horticulturists(which means they help protect our bees from varroa mites.
We have been MPI biosecurity agents this week! We have sorted and identified seed samples and we found PESTS! We have observed and recorded the unique characteristics of stink bugs. We have made traps in our gardens to catch and identify insects (more photos to come). Some insects escaped into our environment and we were Biosecurity Officers who had to identify there locations and species to find out whether they were pests!
Our Matariki Mural
Matariki- learning how Maori kept fit in the past with Whaea Leilani! The girls created their own actions for their poi waiata.
BP Challenge- Making a pikau (backpack)
Judge Whaea Lesley chose Americus' group as the winners. There backpack is 2nd from right!
African Drumming at Malfroy School 19 June
We were lucky to have this group perform for us. Some of our Year 5s also had a workshop with them after lunch.
Making beeswax wraps- Saving our environment from plastic! We each made a wrap to use for our sandwiches these are recyclable.
Science Investigations- House of Science Kit What's the buzz?
We used our scientific capabilities to learn more about bumblebees. We observed a worker bee, a drone and a queen bee under magnifying glasses. We looked at their life cycles. We could hear the vibrations made by tuning forks and we saw how vibrations made water move. We know that bees vibrate directions of flowers by beating their wings. We learned more about their vision using an electromagnetic spectrum. We did an experiment that showed how a bee collects pollen. We have yet to complete our bumblebee habitat. This will go into our school 'bee' garden.
Play- The problem in the beehive! 20 May 2019
After watching the last group perform their play these girls asked if they could do a play about bees. There are no other plays in our School Journals so I suggested they write their own(learner agency). They collaborated to write their own script and they organised their own props. Maia was originally Queen Bee, however, she was away today, so Payton took her role. ENJOY!
Look out for our information about bees during Term 2.
Our Trip to Comvita Unfortunately it was very dark inside so the photos don't show how fantastic Comvita was. Our visit was very informative and interactive. We loved it.
Our Library competition winners
We had to name the planets and come up with a new mnemonic- a pattern to remember the order of the planets in our Solar System. Payton, River and Amelia were winners from our class. Payton's mnemonic was 'Maggie Vine electrified a Monkey so Uryiah could be nice'.
River's mnemonic was 'My very excellent mountain goat just sat on mums new (bag)'.
Amelia's mnemonic was 'Mt Vesuvius eats marshmallows just somewhere underneath New (York)
The 8 planets of our Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Get New Zealand Writing- We got our mail!
The school who wrote postcards for us are Big Rock Primary School in Dunedin. We loved reading their postcards and we easily guessed what each item was. They have the beach just across the road from their school. Their motto is 'Learning in Paradise'!
Food For Thought Programme by The Heart Foundation
We have learned about the food groups and how to read the nutritional panels to find out how much energy, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, sugar and salt are in the foods we eat. Thanks to Cati from The Heart Foundation and New World for our voucher for our shared lunch. Read our books in our Student blogs to find out what we have learnt.
Our Community Clean Up Day
Learning about The Nervous System and TheBrainy Bunch with Bernie and Harold from Life Education.
One of Our Concepts this year is SYSTEMS. We have learned about some of our body systems with a major focus on The Nervous System. The Nervous System sends messages to the heart (The Circulatory System) the lungs (The Respiratory System) the stomach (The Digestive System) and the muscles (The Muscular System). Our Immune System helps us fight germs and diseases.
Read our own books about The Nervous System. Check out our Students Blog 2019 tab to find out what we know!
Disco dancing in the caravan with Bernie. We have some groovy dancers! I apologise for the change in the video half way through! Whaea Jo
BP Tower Challenge Learning Intention- Create the tallest tower with the equipment provided. Success criteria- We will work cooperatively using our Growth Mindsets. With our summer heat the marshmallows started to melt! The winners were Emmaleah, Leon, Lukas and Calais.
Learning Intention- Completing an online survey about ourselves. Success Criteria- We can read and understand the graphs.
